UCD Energy institute
UCD Energy Institute is a collaboration between academia and industry delivering positive impact through research and innovation.
It plays an integral part in the energy transition, endorsing a net zero carbon energy system, promoting modernised integrated energy systems while empowering the citizens through education, innovation and digitalisation.
The Institute is hub of energy education, research, demonstration and outreach at University College Dublin. Interdisciplinary cooperation, collaboration and creation bring together all our members whose area of expertise align to our thematic strands of Energy Systems; Energy Management and Energy in Society. The members come from a important range of disciplines.
The breadth of activity is captured by 3 core initiatives: Fundamental Research Programme, Energy Systems Modelling & Demonstration.
BiOrbic
BiOrbic, Bioeconomy SFI Research Centre is Ireland’s national bioeconomy research centre, established to promote and develop Ireland’s bioeconomy through excellent research and innovation. It is a national collaboration of over 100+ researchers, focused on the development of a sustainable circular bioeconomy, working with food producers and industry to create valuable and sustainable bio-based products and services from natural resources.
Researchers work on selectively separating and extracting valued compounds from renewable materials, converting those resources into novel bio-based products and processes, delivering market and industry- scalable sustainable resources.
A core purpose of BiOrbic is to engage, involve and empower the public and societal actors with the bioeconomy and our research. Its aim is to be a leader in bioeconomy research, supporting Ireland in a just transition to a sustainable society. As well as enabling a vibrant sustainable circular bioeconomy through research excellence, innovation and the development of future bioeconomy leaders for the benefit of Ireland, Europe and beyond.
Programs
NexSys
Launched in May 2022, by the Irish Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, Next Generation Energy Systems (NexSys) is an all-island, multidisciplinary energy research programme. It is hosted by the UCD Energy Institute in partnership with eight other leading research institutions: ESRI, DCU, Queen’s University Belfast, University of Galway, Maynooth University, Trinity College Dublin, UCC, and Ulster University.
46 leading academics work in partnership with industry to tackle the challenges of energy decarbonisation, developing evidence-based pathways for a net zero energy system.
The goal of Nexsys is to ,by 2027, have identified credible and accelerated pathways for a net zero energy system, and have developed technologies and talent needed for the energy transition.
NexSys currently comprises 24 ‘work packages’ of research within its five strands:Energy Systems, Transport, Water, Cities & Communities and Offshore Wind
