Renewable energies such as solar and wind power are zero-emissions alternatives to fossil fuels and are rapidly being installed throughout the world to generate clean, green electricity at ever decreasing costs. However, a challenge with relying completely on solar and wind power is that they are variable, meaning that there are times of oversupply and other times when they are not available at all.
In times of oversupply, the excess energy is normally curtailed or wasted. This energy can alternatively be used to produce green hydrogen, which can be stored and used later for producing electricity or heat when required.
In this project, we are exploring the possibility for producing green hydrogen in Ireland, modelling different future scenarios for supply and potential demand, and calculating the economic and environmental consequences of these scenarios. In this way we are helping to provide a roadmap to a clean energy future and provide Affordable Clean Energy for all.
